How did she do it? Felicity had a knack for cutting right to the heart of a matter. Or for reading his mind.

Either one left him feeling off center. He hadn’t meant to share his concerns with her. He hadn’t even told Jason how unsettled he’d felt after talking with the woman who was interested in buying property for a domestic-abuse shelter in the neighborhood. There was no basis for his unease—the owner of the building at the end of the block wasn’t Roland Sykes, the man who owned the three buildings they wanted to purchase for Youth Connections. He reminded himself that God’s hand had been moving all along—the number of boys coming to play basketball had doubled in the past six months. He’d talked to several area coaches who seemed intrigued by their vision and were thinking about offering their time to run some day camps in the fall. He was in a constant state of awe at the work God was doing on River Street.

“Hey, Hamilton, the boys went out the back but you better make the rounds just to be sure. Lock up when you leave, okay?” Jason emerged from the locker room and tossed the keys in Chris’s direction. “I have a date with ESPN at nine o’clock.”

“No problem.” Chris caught the keys with one finger as they sailed within an inch of Felicity’s ear. She didn’t even flinch.

“Is it a double date?” she murmured.

Chris grinned in reply. “Maybe. First I’ve got to make sure we’ve got an all clear. One night, one of the kids decided not to go home and ended up crashing here for a few days.”

“How did you find out?”

“The mountain of empty soda cans was suspicious. Rats prefer candy and, just between you and me, they have a little trouble with pop tops.”

Felicity giggled. He’d never heard her giggle before and the sound carved a path right through him.

“I’ll bet they do.” Her eyes were lit with humor, her cheeks still flushed with color. Until now, every time he’d seen her she was dressed in her business best with her hair scraped away from her face. She was still beautiful, but beautiful like a statue in a museum—you could admire it but not touch it. Somehow, wearing old gym clothes and with her hair caught back in that loose ponytail, she was not only breathtaking—she was approachable. He resisted the urge to brush a damp strand of silky hair off her cheek. Instead, he shoved his hands in his pockets and retreated, keeping a few steps between them.

Felicity followed him into the empty locker room and reached for the bag on the floor. When he’d noticed it slung over her shoulders, he hadn’t realized she was hiding workout clothes in it. The lady was full of surprises.

He checked the bathroom and straightened up some of the wire baskets that lined the wall.

“Did I mention we want to update the plumbing and add some showers?”

“No.” Felicity’s nose wrinkled. “But I think that’s a great idea.
